Liam Payne couldn’t resist following in the footsteps of inked-up bandmates Harry Styles and Zayn Malik when he got his first tattoo, and now all the One Direction boys have matching tats of two tiny black screws on their ankles…well except for Niall, who has yet to get “screwed” like his buddies. Whether it’s because Liam’s screws tat is so small or because it holds a truly personal for him that he doesn’t want to share with others, the 20-year-old rarely shows off the tiny ink on his ankles, and neither do the other One Directioners. Lucky for you, we have a rare photo of Liam’s screw tattoo for you right here!
Liam Payne’s tattoos on his left and right ankles depict two tiny crosses that the singer says represent screws. During an interview with ABC’s Nightline in August 2013, Liam explained the meaning behind his ankle tats, which marked the beginning of his growing tattoo collection. “This was actually the first tattoo I ever got, all of us but Niall have got these on our ankles. It’s just crosses, I don’t know what it means. They’re screws, they keep you together. It’s like a keep you grounded thing.” We can understand why Liam and the other One Direction guys might feel the need to stay grounded every once in a while, and it’s nice that they share such a permanent reminder of that, don’t you think?
Following the lead of Harry and Zayn, Liam and Louis Tomlinson went and got their screw tattoos inked on October 12, 2012, during a trip to Dublin, Ireland. Following the important tattoo session, Louis tweeted: “So me and Liam joined the crew yesterday and got two screw tattoo’s on our ankles. Now we all have it except Niall! Come on @NiallOfficial.” Busted Niall! The ink-free One Direction singer finally succumbed to the social media heckling from his pals, responding: “Ok I’ll give into you! I’ll get it done! Jesus! Have ya quite finished? #neglect hahahaha.” Talk about peer pressure…but we’re still waiting on that screw tattoo, Niall!
