In the days following the tragic suicide of Robin Williams, fans around the world have paid tribute to the beloved actor and comedian in their own ways, including two women from the UK who had huge portrait tattoos of Robin Williams inked on their thighs. Hayley Patterson, 23, and Melanie Plews-Smith, 39, both consider Robin Williams a childhood hero of theirs and, though the two women have never met, they both opted for portrait tattoos of the actor inked in the same spot on their left thighs. Hayley Patterson’s tattoo of Robin Williams features a colorful portrait of the actor as Peter Pan from the 1991 film Hook, and Melanie Plews-Smith’s tattoo features a black and white portrait of Robin Williams taken from the poster for the film Flubber.
Robin Williams was found dead in his home in Tiburon, California on August 11, and reports indicate that the 63-year-old’s death was attributed to asphyxia caused by hanging. The tragic news of Williams’ death broke that same day, and fans of the actor have been in a collective state of mourning ever since.“Robin Williams has been a hero of mine since I was a baby and the very first film I saw was Hook,” said Hayley Patterson. “It’s still my firm favorite.” The 23-year-old had been planning for a while to get a tattoo tribute to Robin Williams, and had hoped to tweet the finished product to the 63-year-old actor. “Unfortunately that never got a chance to happen so when I heard he had died I knew I had to get it done now,” Patterson said. “It will be a permanent memorial to him.”
Both Patterson and Plews-Smith are obviously big fans of Robin Williams, and Plews-Smith says she has passed her love for the late actor on to her children. Patterson’s colorful tribute to Robin Williams is about eight inches high and was done courtesy of The Ink Doctors Tattoo shop in Southsea, Hampshire. Plews-Smith’s Robin Williams tat is about the same size, and was inked by tattoo artist Stuart “Biffa” Sutherland at a tattoo studio in Yorkshire, where she paid about $400 for the detailed black and white portrait. “I have had a couple of tattoos by Biffa done before and trust him completely, so it was an easy decision when they asked if I was interested,” Plews-Smith said about her tribute tat. “I have grown up with Robin Williams films and my children now love them as well.”
