Selena Gomez may be taking a break from music to concentrate on her acting career, but she’ll always have her music note tattoo to remind her of her first true love. Selena announced at the beginning of 2012 that she would be breaking away from the music industry for most of this year to hone her acting skills, and then made a move no one expected of the sweet former-Disney star. She got a music note tattoo on her wrist to remind her of her background in music. On February 22, 2012, Selena visited a tattoo parlor in Hollywood called Under the Gun, and had tattoo artist Louie Gomez ink a tiny music note on the outside of her right wrist. Initial reports of Selena’s wrist tattoo claimed that the new ink was a heart, but music – not love – is what the 20-year-old had on her mind that day.
During an interview with Access Hollywood, Selena put to rest rumors that her supposed “heart” tattoo and a ring given to her by beau Justin Bieber on Valentine’s Day meant the couple was headed for the altar. “It’s a music note,” Selena said of her wrist tattoo. “Everybody thought that it was a heart for some reason, but music is a big influence in my life.” The young pop star went on to say that in addition to being a singer herself, the fact that she was named after a singer and some other personal stuff influenced her decision to get a tiny music note inked on her wrist. In reference to her ring from the Biebs, the 20-year-old had this to say: “No, no – that’s like almost a friendship ring. It’s just for fun.” Well, there you have it.
Selena’s Wrist Tattoo Honors Ties to Music and Mom
Despite her successes in the music industry – which include three Gold certified studio albums, three Platinum certified singles, and four No. 1 Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs – Selena Gomez is determined to break onto the acting scene this year. She made her starring theatrical film debut in Ramona and Beezus and also recently starred in the edgy film Spring Breakers, but music remains an important influence in the pop star’s life – hence the music note tattoo. After getting her wrist tattoo, Selena Gomez said, “I was named for a singer [Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez] and music obviously is a big influence for me. And there’s music stuff with my mom that means a lot to me, too.” Perhaps Selena’s music note tattoo is a reminder to herself and her fans that she’s really a songstress at heart, no matter where 2012 takes her.
Selena Sheds Good-Girl Image in 2012
After wrapping up her long-running television series The Wizards of Waverly Place last year, Selena Gomez apparently set her mind to shedding the good-girl image she was so well-known for in the past. In addition to pushing the fashion envelope with some revealing ensembles lately and stripping down and smoking pot in the upcoming Spring Breakers, Selena’s music note tattoo really put a nail in the coffin of the naïve teenager she was in her former life. But she didn’t stop there! Selena added another tattoo to her collection in September 2012 – a set of Roman numerals inked on the back of her neck that is apparently a tribute to a family member who means a lot to the pop star. After getting her music note tattoo on her wrist, Selena Gomez announced that she wasn’t planning on getting any more tats. Lucky for us, Selena changed her mind. We can’t wait to see what tattoos she gets next!
