If you ask Selena Gomez for one word to describe herself, it seems that word would be “revival,” a word that is chock full of meaning for the pint-sized pop star, beyond it being the title of her new album, and one that comes up more than once during her recent interview with Refinery29. In the interview, Selena covers a broad range of topics, from her new album (her second solo record overall, and first since breaking ties with Disney), to the changes she has made in her life during the past year, her highly-publicized romance with former boyfriend Justin Bieber, and last but not least, her growing collection of tattoos.
Selena Gomez started out with one tiny tattoo of a music note on her wrist, and it seemed at the time that she would be “one and done.” But during this new interview, the pop star admits that there are definitely more tattoos in her future, saying, “I wanted something small to test the waters. Now I’m addicted.” Unlike some other inked-up celebrities, all of Selena Gomez’s tattoos are meaningful, from the Roman numerals of her mother’s birthday on her wrist, to the “Love yourself first” Arabic phrase on her back, and the tiny initial “G” behind her ear (which she says is, in fact, a tribute to her baby sister, Gracie).
Back when Selena Gomez got her first couple of tattoos, everyone was convinced that it was then-boyfriend Justin Bieber who influenced the singer to get inked. Today, it seems that Selena Gomez is in full control, and knows exactly what she wants. For goodness sakes, in order to record this new album on her own terms, the pop star fired her long-time manager (her mom!), hired new management, and signed a record deal with Interscope, officially severing ties with Disney, her employer since she was seven. Take one look at Selena Gomez now and you’ll see that she’s the type of person who takes the reins and makes her own decisions, especially when it comes to tattoos.
The tattoo Selena got most recently is a design on her left hip which appears to be a spiritual Om symbol, but which the singer says represents when she met one of her best friends eight years ago. And the 23-year-old doesn’t plan to stop there. According to the Refinery29 interview, Selena Gomez plans to get a seventh tattoo to commemorate her own revival – the new album and her personal reinvention – and we can’t wait to find out what design she chooses for her next piece of ink. Do you think she will she pull a Justin Bieber and get her Revival album title tattooed on her body? Or will she go for something more classic and subtle, like her other tattoos? Stay tuned to find out!
