Pop star Kesha has turned over a new leaf since she finished treatment at a Chicago-area rehab center for an eating disorder in March, and the controversial singer is settling nicely into a life sans dollar sign. Fans first noticed the change when Kesha announced her return to Twitter following treatment at the Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center under her new account name @KeshaRose. Formerly known by the stylized stage name Ke$ha, which quickly became a symbol of the crazy party lifestyle she previously enjoyed, the singer appears to be starting with a clean slate now that she’s recovered from her struggles with anorexia and bulimia, and we’re wondering if removing the dollar sign tattoo on her hand will be the next big change she makes in her road to recovery.
“I’m a crusader for being yourself and loving yourself, but I’ve found it hard to practice,” Kesha admitted prior to being admitted to the rehab center. “I’ll be unavailable for the next 30 days, seeking treatment for my eating disorder…to learn to love myself again, exactly as I am.” That apparently means without the infamous dollar sign in her name, which Kesha has rocked since the beginning of her musical career. “I was so happy being broke. And I’m happy not being broke,” Kesha has explained in the past about the meaning behind the dollar sign in her former stage name. “I care about taking care of people that have taken care of me – that’s important to me. But to be honest, I’m kind of repulsed by the gluttony and excesses of a lot of people in the limelight.”
Kesha originally adopted the dollar sign in her name as an ironic gesture early on in her career, when she was struggling to get by financially, and the rest is history, as they say. According to the 27-year-old, the stylized stage name was actually inspired by the dollar sign tattoo she has inked on her left hand, which she got as a joke back before she became famous. “I was just like ‘WHATEVER! Out of money…Whatever. I don’t need money,’” Kesha explained. “So, out of money, put it on my hand, put it in my name, and it was just kind of a joke, and it stuck.” Now that Kesha has officially removed the dollar sign from her name and with it all connection to her past life and struggles with money and eating disorders, we have a feeling the singer’s dollar sign tattoo will be the next thing to go!
